Volunteering at Love INC Food Bank

You will be serving side-by-side with our team to create a grocery store shopping experience for our clients. The best part of this role is having a direct influence on helping people in our community have access to healthy food for themselves and their family.

***Please understand we serve food at the highest food safety standards for our clients and it is critical to serve this precious resource with the most dignity and respect when interacting with our clients who are facing their own challenges. Your words and behavior hold great power so please remember that while you are serving this vulnerable population.

What To Wear And Be Prepared For:

  • NO open-toed shoes are allowed in the Food Bank for YOUR safety! We have a policy for anyone working onsite to protect your feet from pallets, moving equipment, and a slippery box that could fall on your feet. Please wear Casual attire (jeans, t-shirt, tennis shoes recommended and please keep it appropriate). Be prepared for different climates; we do work in the fridge, freezer, and outdoors so clothing for variable temperatures will help ensure you have the best experience with us.
  • If you are asked to work in the “Repack Food Rescue Room” we will need your help following the Bulk Repack safety regulations for our vulnerable clients by tying long hair back, wearing a hair net or beard net if applicable, and not wearing jewelry as it can fall into the open exposed food leading to a choking hazard. There are more safety requirements that the team can review with you once you are on site and helping in this special and critical role.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early so the staff can properly train you on the role you will be helping with.
  • You will need to be customer service focused.
  • You will need to be comfortable working in a food bank environment.
  • You will need to be able to bend, lift, and stand for up to 2 hours.
  • When you show up for your shift, our team members will place you in a role that helps support the effectiveness of our operations to ensure we can help as many people as possible.
  • Please be flexible with your role preference as we often must make decisions based on the greatest need for the clients and not role preference. For example, it may not be a fan favorite but we need your help to maintain the building cleanliness to ensure food safety.
  • Please share any physical limitations you may have when you arrive. We will do our best to match you to a role that accommodates this (Ex. using a chair instead of standing). Some lifting and bending is required so it is important to inform the staff if you have any physical restrictions so we can keep you safe and protected.
  • Lastly, please leave personal belongings at home. We do have a small break room with limited space, but it is better to leave it at home.

Requirements

  • Comfortable engaging in direct 1:1 interaction with clients, including those with disabilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors, including in adverse weather conditions such as snow, rain, or wind.
  • A warm, empathetic attitude with a commitment to creating an accessible and inclusive environment.
Your efforts in this role will make a tangible difference in the lives of clients who face challenges accessing food, ensuring they leave with not just groceries, but also a sense of care and connection.

Food Bank Volunteer Roles

Counter Service Volunteer
From behind a table, you will assist clients to choose the product they want, and you will hand it to them. It is important to note that some of the products we have may be limited. We use a sticker system to identify those clients who are shopping for their individual family or multiple families. You will need to be visually aware of the stickers and determine what the limit is for that client. A blue dot means they are a family of more than 5 and are allowed 2 of each item.
Product Staging Assistant
This role simply requires keeping the staging tables for distribution stocked with plenty of each grocery item from the shelves in the back so that stocking volunteers can easily load their table with quantities needed for each client. For cold items, we try to keep only a few household’s worth of products out at a time while leaving the rest in the fridge/freezer to be handed down as needed. When these products need to be replenished, a staff member will restock the table with these items.
Repack Volunteer
This role will be choosing one item of each TEFAP food item and repacking it into an individual household box. In addition to repacking bulk items into household proportions. Products can range from fresh produce, canned goods, to eggs and/or pet food. Some items will need to be relabeled with allergens and ingredients to try to safeguard our clients’ safety. Please be prepared to do some light lifting (about 15 pounds), bending, standing, or sitting for the duration of the shift. We also pack TEFAP boxes to be distributed to Dinosaur once a month.
Cardboard and End of Day (EOD) Volunteer

This role tackles the abundance of cardboard produced when breaking down bulk donated food into household proportions. You will walk around and collect all the discarded cardboard produced as Volunteers and Staff are working on different product. It will then be broken down and taken out to our trash can.

The End Of Day Volunteer will begin their shift in a role assisting while clients are still shopping. Once the Love INC Food Bank is closed to clients, this volunteer will then help with cleaning projects that are critical to ensure everyone’s safety and to prepare the Food Bank for the next day.

Client Shopping Buddy

As a Client Shopping Buddy, you will play a vital role in improving the Love INC Food Bank shopping experience by providing personalized assistance and support. Love INC provides four wheeled carts to help clients take their food commodities to their vehicle.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients with navigating the shopping floor, loading carts, and selecting items.
  • Provide support in transporting and loading groceries into clients’ vehicles.
  • Engage with clients in friendly, 1:1 interaction.
  • Return carts to designated areas after use.
  • Maintain a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all clients.
Distribution Safety Assistant
These volunteers are responsible for constantly observing the entire distribution site for and removing potential tripping hazards, disposing of trash, breaking down cardboard, ensuring no food items are ever directly on the ground and that no volunteer personal items (e.g., water bottles, phones, etc.) are ever on distribution tables. What to wear and be prepared for:
Sorting/Stocking Volunteer
This can include Produce, Cooler, Freezer, and Assorted Food Items (AFI)

On Monday mornings our Love INC food rescue driver delivers food from our local grocery stores. We then need volunteers to sort through these donated items consisting of produce, frozen meats, dairy items and non-food items.

  • Fresh produce needs to be sorted based on our food safety requirements by looking at quality. We want our clients to see healthy, appealing food that is safe for their consumption. After that, the produce will be placed in individual boxes for distribution.
  • Dairy items and frozen meats will be checked for quality, expiration dates, and placed in individual distribution boxes or stocked in the fridge/ freezer. A volunteer will keep the fridge/freezers stocked throughout the shift to keep up with the flow of clients seeking these special commodity items.
  • Non-food items will be categorized and neatly arranged in boxes for the clients to browse and select from.

This can mean a referral to an area agency or services provided by area churches and volunteers through the Connection Center.

Laundry and Shower Ministry

The Laundry and Shower Ministry provides access to shower and laundry facilities for people with this need.

The Personal Needs Ministry

The Personal Needs Ministry provides cleaning supplies and personal care items to people in need.

Used-Furniture Ministry

Volunteers from various local churches are mobilized to help provide donated furniture to households in Moffat, Routt and Rio Blanco counties. If you know of a neighbor in need or would like to donate gently-used furniture that can benefit a family in need, contact the Love INC Connection Center. Please note, we no longer accept donations of mattresses, hide-a-bed or sleeper sofas. We may accept bed frames if clean and in good condition.

Car Care Clinic Ministry

The Car Care Clinic Ministry is designed to provide seniors, disabled individuals, and single mothers with general vehicle maintenance once a year in the fall. Assistance with oil changes, repairs, and tires may be available.

Food Pantry Ministry

Community members support our local food pantries by donating non-perishable items and funds to purchase fresh produce and dairy for families needing assistance. Families receive 1-14 days worth of food that includes meats, breads, pasta, cereal, canned goods, and as much fresh food as is available. In addition, many families are referred to St. Michael’s Kitchen for a hot meal.
